09-10 U 12 - Petite - Goderich Petite Team wins Huron Perth Championship and Silver at Regionals
Submitted By Todd Stanbury on Saturday, April 10, 2010
The Goderich Petite Ringette team headed to the Championship Western Regionals tournament with only one loss during the regular season.

The loss was to the London team during the last scheduled game.  The round robin portion of the tournament included games against Owen Sound, Guelph and London.

Goderich faced London on Friday with the game ending tied at 3.  The Goderich team played hard and knew that the London team was tough.  The game was a real test as it was both physical and fast with both teams working hard. The first game on Saturday was against Guelph with the Goderich team taking the win 5-2.

The team headed back to the hotel to prepare for the next tilt against Owen Sound.  The winner moved to the gold game on Sunday against London. The Owen Sound game started slowly with the 2-2 tie half way through the game.  Owen Sound came on strong scoring 4 consecutive goals taking a huge lead.   After a time out, the Goderich squad started to come alive.  The girls scored 6 goals during the final 7 minutes to take the game 8-7.  An amazing finish to an incredible game!

The Gold Medal game on Sunday against London went to London 5-4.  The match was close but Goderich came home with Silver.  The teams were well matched and the game could have went our way with a little luck and a couple of bounces.

This past Saturday, the team took home the Huron Perth Championship in St Marys.  The team was matched against Exeter and beat them 6-1.  Kyle Stanbury started the scoring 3 minutes into the game on a nice pass from Nerena Goud.  Only a minute later, Brianne Merner headed to the net and put a nice shot into the net with Erin Boyce and Lauren Erb receiving the assists.  Lauren then scored her first of the game with Brianne netting an assist.  Sarah Glenn streaked to the net and put a low shot between the legs of the goalie after a great individual effort.  Grace Bonnett made it 5-0 with assists going to Jessica Telford and Kyra Lewis.  After Exeter breaking Courtney Sowerby’s shutout bid, Lauren scored her second of the day with Kyra tacking on another assist.  Kaitlyn Austin made a beautiful pass in an attempt to increase the lead sending Kyle in on a breakaway.  Defensive play was the key to the day’s success with Jenna Stanbury, Kyra, Brianne and Sarah leading the way.

The season was a great success with the team winning 3 tournaments, Silver at Regionals and the Huron Perth Championship.
