Higgs Puts On Clinic In Season Opener
Submitted By Kevin Hummel on Friday, October 21, 2011
The Goderich U19 squad began the season with a 4-0 win over London 2 and helped netminder Briar Higgs earn his first shut out of the 2011-2012 campaign. Despite the early five minute slumber, the Goderich team was awoken with a goal by Holly Ryan at the 14:47 mark.  Shayla Mathers collected the lone assist on the play. Goderich then got into some penalty trouble and were assessed two minor penalties - a trip and a body contact - and were forced to kill the infractions off.

During this 5 on 3 advantage, London 2 had several key chances on the Goderich goal, but Higgs stood on his head and ensured nothing entered the cage.

At 4:56, while still down two players, Marijke Oudshoorn took a great feed from Ryan, slipped in behind the defence and rifled a screamer into the top corner to take a 2-0 lead.

Lauren Dietrich sniped the third with a whistler from the slot and Jacqueline Bedard added the fourth with a break-away marker late in the last frame.   Bedard, Ryan and Jenna Pentland are credited with the helpers on these final tallies.

Of note for next game, rookie sensation Amanda Menchenton and veteran centre Jessica Hummel both cleared waivers this morning and are eagerly anticipating hitting the ice Sunday.

NEXT GAME : Sunday, October 23 @ Maitland Recreation Centre @ 10:30 am against the Seaforth Storm.
