U19 Start HP Playoffs With A Bang
The U19 squad had a double-header on Sunday and came through victorious in both contests thanks to some incredible goaltending and timely goals.
The Belle team ended their regular season play against St. Thomas at the Y at 1:30 pm with a 6-5 nail-biter and then were required to start the Huron Perth playoffs in Seaforth at 5:30 pm where another win was secured with the score notched 2-1.
St. Thomas at Goderich
The home team came flying out of the gates with a three goal spree in the first period. Captain Holly Ryan, Ashley Johnson and Jenna Pentland added the markers with two assists going to Pentland, one to Ryan and another single to Kira Trebish.
The St. Thomas crew found life though at the start of the second period and deposited four unanswered goals in the Goderich net.
Jessica Hummel wristed a laser beam in to the top corner to tie the game up after deft passing from Johnson and Kaity Peters. The teams then traded goals to tie the game once again 5-5. Pentland added her second of the afternoon with great helpers from Shayla Mathers and Assistant Captain Katie O'Brien.
Hummel secured the win at 2:30 of the second when she scored her second of the game after a deft pass in the slot from O'Brien.
Netminder Briar Higgs held the fort with a couple TSN turning-point saves in the dying seconds of the contest.
The Belle team finished the regular season in third spot with a respectable 12-4-7 record.
Goderich at Seaforth
Following their victory hours earlier at home, the Belle crew loaded up and headed down highway eight for a date with their nemisis - the Seaforth Storm. The last time these two teams met was in the Kitchener Tournament two weeks previous, where Seaforth dispensed with their county-cousins 3-0.
This was a different day though boys and girls. The visitors came away from Seaforth with a 2-1 win in a well fought game despite falling into penalty trouble.
Goals by Shayla Mathers and Assistant Captain Chandal Cunningham sealed the deal. Ryan assisted Mathers tally while Abby Hoy fed Cunningham with a picture-perfect goal-mouth pass to notch the winner.
Higgs put on a goaltending clinic with some acrobatic saves and clutch moves that allowed Goderich to take the first game in their round robin playoffs.
