U16 Win Huron Perth Championship In Overtime
Submitted By khummel on Sunday, April 11, 2010
The U16 team capped off an incredible season with a huge upset of Forest in the Huron-Perth Championship.  In a "winner take all" one game show down, the Goderich squad gritted their teeth and emerged the victors.

Forest had Goderich's number all year - in fact the series was 4-1-1 in favour of the Xtreme.   Goderich and Forest were so evenly matched this date that overtime was necessary to determine a winner and who would be able to take home the coveted Huron Perth banner and hang it their home rink.

After leading the entire game, the Goderich team allowed the Forest Xtreme to claw back into contention until they tied the game 6-6 with only 9 seconds left in regulation.

At 1:26 into the overtime frame, Lauren Dietrich capped off her hat trick for the game with a whistling drive, high stick side to seal the deal.  Jessica Hummel and Maren MacKenzie assisted on the gargantuan goal.

The Goderich fans erupted in a frenzy as the jubilant players mobbed Dietrich and netminder Meredith McEwan.

Rounding out the rest of the scoring for G-town was Hummel with a deuce, while MacKenzie and Jenna Pentland added singles.  Kait Fisher was tops in helpers this day with a hat trick of her own, Hummel with two and Candace Cunningham and Ashley Johnson with singles.

To finally grind out a victory against their nemisis from the entire year was a mammoth achievement and one that required every player to play with discipline and strength.  The Goderich defensive core were diving to block shots, beating Forest to the ring and challenging the strong Xtreme forwards at the blueline.   The forwards marked all their checks, hustled whenever they were on the ice and beat the Forest goalie with some awesome play-making and shots.

Well done to the rest of the team - McKenna Hulley, Courtney Beattie, Brittany Boyce, Marijke Oudshoorn and Keisha Stoddart who battled and were so successful.

"This was an epic battle between two titans and Goderich certainly earned the banner with their exceptional team play and hard work" remarked parent John MacKenzie.

The banner will be raised to the rafters at the beautiful Maitland Recreation Centre in the coming days - congratulations ladies !!
