Goderich U19 Top Of Standings At Christmas Break
Submitted By khummel on Wednesday, December 21, 2011
The Goderich Belle team emerged victorious by a slim margin of 2-1, after an incredible goalie battle in metropolitan St. Thomas  on Tuesday evening.

The other story line in this contest was a whopping 30 minutes in penalty minutes adjudicated by the referees,  who called a tight but fair game.

The visiting team made the trek to St. Thomas without the stellar veteran defence pairing of Carling MacKenzie and Kira Trebish however rookie phenoms Jacqueline Bedard and Maren MacKenzie stepped in very convincingly to fill the void and overwhelm the opposition.

The other defensive pairing of Marijke Oudshoorn and Brittany Boyce were also equal to the test in this close game.

Hats off to netminder Briar Higgs who held the fort between the pipes and shut down three separate five on three advantages by St. Thomas.

Lauren Dietrich started off the scoring, unassisted at 11:08 of the second period to match the opposition's single tally.   The score remained tied at one until 1:10 left in the final frame when Jessica Hummel fed a beauty pass to the roving Holly Ryan who rifled a screamer, low, glove side to give Goderich the lead.   St. Thomas properly called a time out and pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker.

When play resumed, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls.....mayhem ensued with non-stop action, bodies flying and people in the stands screaming with delight.   When the whistle blew, there was 1.7 seconds left on the clock and St. Thomas had the ring - one shot could tie it up.   The blistering wrister was stopped by Higgs and the buzzer went right before the ring trickled in !   The buzzer beat the shot and Goderich was celebrating !

A strong team game was also highlighted by the play of Kait Fisher, Shayla Mathers, Jenna Pentland, Ashley Johnson and Amanda Menchenton.

The U19 squad remains in first place in the West Region standings going into the Christmas break with a record of 7-2-1.

On behalf of the players and coaching staff - Merry Christmas and play safe !
