Petites Start Second Half
Submitted By S Durnin on Wednesday, January 30, 2013
The Goderich U12 Girls started the second half on January 12th at home against Tillsonburg.   After an early goal by the visitors, Goderich got going and never looked back on their way to a 7-3 win. Lauren continued her hot streak with 2 goals and two assists. Grace M. and Marley each collected a goal and an assist, Faith, Hailey and Sarah scored goals, Mallory got two assists and Chloe, Grace Mc., and Eden picked up assists.

The next day the Petites traveled to Elmira and played one of the most exciting games of the season. Woolwich and Kitchener have crossed over into the Western Conference after dominating the East. Woolwich opened up by scoring two quick goals. Marley added her first from Lauren before the end of the period and Goderich trailed 2-1 at the half. Woolwich scored early again to restore the two goal lead. In short order, Marley cut the lead to one. Goderich tied the game at three when Sarah scored assisted by Marley. The see saw continued when Woolwich scored and then Mallory scored from a pass from Lauren and it was all tied up. Just when it seemed that the game would end in a tie, Marley charged from the Goderich bench, took a feed from Chloe and fired a hard wrist shot into the Woolwich net with just 17 seconds left. Woolwich pulled their goalie and had one more chance but Sydney kept the ring out of the net to seal the win.

On January 20th, Goderich hosted Mitchell VanderKuylen. It was clear that Mitchell came to play and jumped on Goderich early with lots of shots and scoring. A late charge by the Ladies was not enough and they lost 7-4. Lauren scored two, Hailey earned a goal and an assist, Marley finished out the scoring. Other assists went to Emily and Melanie.

On January 27th, Goderich toured to Kitchener to play the other Eastern crossover team. This was a fast game from the opening play and was very similar to the Woolwich game. Goderich opened the scoring when Marley beat the strong Kitchener goaltender. The home side scored two quick goals to pull ahead 2-1 at the end of the first. Hailey from Grace M tied the score. Kitchener went ahead and Marley scored her second. Goderich then took the lead when Chloe scored with assists to Faith and Sarah but once again the game was tied when Kitchener scored. Finally with 1:39 remaining in the game, Marley was sent in alone on a pass from Lauren and Maddog (who has been practicing her wrist shot at home) fired a hard shot by the Kitchener goalie to take the lead 5-4. After that it was hold onto your hat, as Kitchener pressed hard for the tie. With their goalie out, they peppered Sydney with shots. The defense held strong and cleared the ring from harms way several times in the last minute to preserve the win. While it was clear that all of the girls played their hearts out for the win, first year players Grace D. and Hannah continued their development and both played their best games of the season.

The team should be really proud of themselves as they not only showed their talent, but also their sportsmanship. Good job girls!
