PETITE BLUE EDGED IN STONETOWN
Submitted By ewilson on Wednesday, November 20, 2013
With only a couple of days to savour their Gold Medal performance in Exeter, the U12 Blue Ice Crushers travelled to St. Mary’s to play a rare weeknight road game against a very talented Sniper squad. Faced with the possibility of a post-tournament let down, Coach Deb Lewis reminded Team Blue that this Sniper team would be hungry in their home rink.

Thirty seconds into the contest, Sniper standout, Amy Gros, neatly tucked a shot just past starting goaltender, Hannah Kent, for a 1-0 lead. The Sniper attack kept coming, and, it seemed that our Blue Defence corps of Tamika Walters, Grace Demelo, Melanie McClinchey, and Ella Wick were constantly under attack. With the score 3-0, Chloe Lewis put the Ice Crushers on the board with a nice set up by Wick to narrow the deficit to 3-1 at the break.

Early in the final frame, Gros scored another of her 6 goals to put the home squad up 4-1. Shortly after, Faith Wilson reaped the reward after some good work by Walters and Demelo. The two teams continued to trade goals moving up and down the ice at the Pyramid Centre at a frantic pace. Arden Bowler and Katie Ridsdale battled hard through the neutral zone to help spring Lewis for Team Blues’ fourth goal. Down 7-4, Ice Crusher wingers Avery Cross and Hannah Greer helped set the tone for a Goderich comeback with a couple of great shifts.

Kent, after making a spectacular save with a couple of minutes left, saw Wilson make it 7-5 after some unselfish play by Cross and Ridsdale. The Lewis, Bowler, Ridsdale line made things very interesting with a goal in the final minute. The last 30 seconds were chaotic as Wilson somehow eluded the tight checking Snipers and hit the post with 5 seconds remaining continuing around the net for a last second wrap around which narrowly missed giving the St. Mary’s Snipers a hard fought 7-6 victory.

The U12 Blue have very little time to re-group as they will be hosting the London Lynx on Thursday, November 21st @ Memorial Arena. Game time is 7:00pm.
