Hardware to finish out the season!
Submitted By dlewis on Monday, March 31, 2014
After an extended hiatus, the Goderich U12 Blue team where reunited in Guelph at Regionals for the final four games of the season. Game one brought a new match up against Guelph Gold, a strong looking bunch as warm ups began. As the game got under way it was evident Blue would have their work cut out for them.

Guelph was first on the board with a quick goal under 2 minutes in, Goalie Hannah Kent was being tested at every turn as Guelph's offence was dominant early on. A second Guelph goal sparked some fight in the Blue girls, as they answered back with their first point of the game, scored by Chloe Lewis, assisted by defence Faith Wilson, and from there the two teams would call and answer each other until a 6-5 final for Guelph was in the books. Lewis went on to score an impressive three more goals, assisted by Ella "Qwick" Wick and Hannah Greer. While Wilson stuffed the final Goderich goal with a beauty assist from Avery Cross. Defence was key in this game as the score could have easily been much further apart if it wasn't for Temika Walter, Grace DeMelo and Melly McClinchey. The girls had the rest of the day off to prepare for games two and three on day two of Regionals.

Saturday morning brought a familiar match up against the Mitchell Stingers. An intense first period with end to end play and resulted no points for either team - impressive as Goderich was short handed for 6 minutes as the refs were tight on the calls. Goderich defence was on fire, clearing our end and standing tall as our goal tender was peppered by Mitchell's offence, who ultimately was the first on the board two minutes into the second half. Blue answered back three minutes later with their first and only of the game, scored by Wilson with a sweet setup by defence Temika Walter. With a lot of physical play, Goderich forwards Arden Bowler, Greer, Ridsdale and Cross took it all in stride as penalties against Mitchell gave us three more power play opportunities. However, Mitchell's goalie would have no part of it as she stopped everything we gave her and game two ended in a 1-1 tie. Physically exhausted, Goderich Blue rested up for game three.

Saturday evening we squared off against the Tillsonburg Twisters, a league team we hadn't seen since the early part of the season. Dominating right off the hop, Tillsonburg was up by two and had us on our heels as net-minder Kent was being tested again and again. Regrouping at half-time, Blue dug deep and Wilson netted our first goal under one minute in. The Twisters didn't let up getting their third only a minute later. Goderich struggled to put anything together coming out of our own end and with a turn over inside the blue line, Tillsonburg managed another point at the seven minute mark. Down 4-1, Goderich started to turn things around as Lewis, Katie Ridsdale and Walters put a second goal on the board. Dominating the centre zone, DeMelo, Walter, McClinchey and Wick kept the play in the Tillsonburg end providing our forwards with much needed opportunities. As the clock wound down, the three W's, Wilson, Wick and Walter, stuffed number three in the net and a much needed time-out for Goderich was in order. With a minute left on the clock, Goalie Kent was on the bench and a sixth Goderich attacker on the ice, our efforts seemed futile as the Tillsonburg defence could not be split. Then opportunity appeared. An offensive face-off and a hail mary was all we needed as Wick fed Wilson who tied it up with 7.6 seconds left on the clock. An exciting finish for Goderich!

With all games now complete in our division, our tie in points would have us squaring off against Tillsonburg again on Sunday for the bronze medal. After a night's rest, the Blue girls took to the ice for the last game of the 2013/2014 season, hoping for hardware. The first period began with the Twisters testing Kent and her defence early on. Standing tall between the pipes, she wasn't leaving Tillsonburg any room to score. Moving quickly up the ice, Goderich unleashed a flurry of attempts by Greer and Bowler who stuffed the first point on a sweet rebound from Wilson, and then a second goal from the same duo at the four minute mark. Answering quickly, Tillsonburg netted their first, making it 2-1 heading into the second. Goderich defence was tight, clearing our zone and supporting their goalie Kent, who with her long tosses, gave opportunity to forwards Cross and Ridsdale, who racked up the third and fourth points of the game for Goderich. The Twisters pushed back with their second and third goals as the clock approached the nine minute mark. Goderich was about to be tested as two penalties would leave us short handed and on our heels. DeMelo, Wick and Lewis drained the clock until we were back to full strength. Keeping their nerves in check, Goderich held tight keeping the Twisters, now six strong, at bay. As the clock wound down, Lewis cleared the ring with an end-to-end attempt on Tillsonburg's empty net, narrowly missing as the buzzer goes! It's a bronze finish to the season for Goderich U12 Blue - congratulations on an incredible team effort girls!
