ALL TRICKS, NO TREATS AS TWEENS ROLL

Halloween morning saw the U14 Ice Crushers travel to St. Thomas for a Western Region Ringette League game at the unique Elgin Memorial Arena. The Crushers, who had been stung less than a week earlier by league rival Mitchell in the gold medal game of the 12th Annual Goderich Ringette Tournament, came ready to play! The ever dominant veteran line of Sarah S., Lauren S., and, Hannah G. connected less than 30 seconds into the game. Said Coach Simon Taylor... “With 10 of our 15 players being rookies, these veterans have been awesome providing strong leadership and work ethic in both games, and, practices.”

Moments later, Arden B. was rewarded for her early season hard work as she rifled a shot past a helpless Thunder goalie on a nifty pass from Michaela A. for her first of the season. Goderich ring stopper, Hannah K., did not have a very busy game, but, made some quality save early in the contest to deny the home side from gaining any momentum.

With a comfortable 5-0 lead, the Avery C., Grace T., and, Ben C. line went to work combining for 3 goals in less than a minute with some great passing. Less than 30 seconds later, Katie R. fed a pass to Melanie M. who fired a wrist shot staking the visitors to a 9-1 lead at the recess.

In the second period, the Tweens were led by the constantly moving Ella W. who was relentless in her checking of the Thunder players. Kiara P. and Megan K. then elated the Coaching Staff as they connected on a very intelligent passing play. The 12-2 final also saw first goals of the season scored by Avery, Melanie, and, Megan.

The Crushers had very little time to eat their candy as they had a matinee tilt at the MRC versus the Hanover Heat. It was evident very early that the recipe for success in this game was going to be whether the home Crushers were going to be able to capitalize with their speed and quickness against a much bigger Heat squad. Goderich buzzed around their opponents end creating many opportunities in the first seven minutes. The powerful skating Grace M. took advantage of an intelligent feed from Ben C. to bury the ring for a 1-0 lead. The teams began to trade chances, and, Hannah K. was up to the challenge in the Goderich net. With just under 2 minutes remaining in the period, Grace T. thrilled the crowd with assists going to Ben and Avery C..

The final period saw the Heat get turned up in the MRC as the locals came out a little flat with their skating legs. With the score 2-1, Lauren S. connected on a feed from Hannah G. to ease the tension a bit. When Hannah G. scored two minutes later from Lauren S. and Sarah S., the game appeared to be well in hand. However, Hanover came at the Crushers in waves scoring two goals in less than a minute to stun the sellout crowd. After a couple of strategic time outs, Sarah S. exploded down the left side of the ice, expertly checking the unsuspecting Heat defender, proceeding to fire a rocket past a helpless goaltender for the 5-4 lead with only eleven seconds remaining. Hanover had time to get two last opportunities in the final seconds, but, Hannah K. made a spectacular stop in the final seconds to secure the win.
