Since their opening day loss in Mitchell to the Stingers back in mid – October, the Tweens have worked very hard to develop as a team to roll off nine consecutive league victories.

On Sunday, November 22nd, the locals played host to the Kitchener Wildcats at the MRC. Goderich came out flying continually peppering the visitors with a flurry of effort in the early stages. Defensive fireplug, Ella W., helped her team when she was able to spring a nice pass to Grace T. who neatly put the Crushers on the scoreboard.

Kitchener responded with two quick goals on Hannah Kent to serve notice that they came to play. Young gun, Arden B., capitalized after some great work with Katie R. and Michaela A. The veteran line of Lauren S., Sarah S., and, Hannah G. then connected for a brief lead, but, the visiting Wildcats evened things up before the break.

Just eight seconds into the final stanza, Sarah S. buried a go ahead marker on a great pass from Melanie M. Later in the shift, Hannah G. converted a nice feed from Lauren S. After Sarah S. made it 6-3, the Wildcats put on some heavy pressure scoring a pair of goals, and, forcing Hannah K. to make some great saves to keep the score from being tied. As the game wound down, solid defenders Grace M., Kiara P., and, Megan K. did an excellent job of helping to relieve the pressure on Hannah K.

Hannah G. scored again with 2:17 remaining to restore the two goal cushion. This was followed by Ben C., who fired an excellent shot to reward some fantastic work from line mates Avery C. and Grace T. allowing Goderich to outlast Kitchener 8-5.

On November 28th, the Ice Crushers travelled to Forest for a Saturday matinee versus a physical Extreme squad. With very inexperienced officials, an abundance of questionable one-sided calls, and, some home coached unsportsmanlike tactics displayed, the visiting Crushers found themselves with a nice recipe of “visitor frustration” forcing goaltender, Hannah K., to be on top of her game. The rookie ring stopper did not disappoint!

Goderich scored quickly when Lauren S. scored the first of her three one minute into the contest on a feed from Hannah G. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, Sarah S. scored with a minute left before the break. Forest stormed back to take a 4-3 lead as they were aided by a steady string of power plays. The constantly improving, Arden B., evened things up on a nice feed from Katie R.

Both teams traded chances for the next five minutes until Lauren S. completed the hat trick with the assist going to Sarah S. with 55 seconds remaining to secure a hard fought road win.

Sunday, December 6th

The Tweens had a busy day planned with two games scheduled at the MRC. The morning contest was a battle for second place in the overall W.R.R.L. standings with the Owen Sound Extreme visiting. Both of these one loss teams had met earlier in the season in the Goderich Tournament with the Crushers hanging on for a one goal victory. Lauren S. got things going on a pass from Megan K. to get the capacity “Tim Hortons” crowd into the game at the 13:35 mark. Sarah S. made it 2-0 with the assists going to Lauren S. and Hannah G. The Extreme really  tried to stretch out the ice by floating their forwards in the Goderich end, but, the defence of Melanie M., Ella W., Grace M., and, Megan K. did an excellent job of owning the middle of the rink. With just over two minutes before the recess, Arden B., continued her consistent scoring on a pass from Katie R. to make it 3-0.

Owen Sound took advantage of a few relaxed Crusher moments scoring twice in less than a minute to narrow the deficit. However, Sarah S. exploded scoring three goals to complete a four goal performance with Grace M. assisting on two of them for a 6-3 home win.

The afternoon contest saw the winless Dorchester Dragons invading the MRC. In the first few minutes, one would never know that the Crusher opponents had not experienced a victory as they hemmed the locals in their own end forcing Hannah K. to make several early quality stops.

The home squad eventually started to get their skates moving scoring nine straight goals before the period was over. Scoring for Goderich was Ben C.(2), Sarah S.(2), Ella W., Grace T., Hannah G., Katie R., Lauren S., and, Arden B. Avery C. had some impressive opportunities, and, was rewarded with two assists.

The final period saw solid defender, Melanie M., score a pair of goals. The final goal for the U14’s came on a fabulous lead pass from Megan K. to Kiara P. who made no mistake in rifling a shot past the helpless Dragon goalie.

Goderich now has a week to prepare before they travel to St. Mary’s to participate in the 8th Annual Snipers Tournament on December 11-13th. If you happen to be travelling through Stonetown next weekend, why not visit the Pyramid Centre to experience exciting Ice Crusher ringette action!!!
