U14 Tween Crushers Win Gold

In St. Mary’s On Friday, December 11th, the Pyramid Centre in St. Mary’s barely had the lights turned on when the U14 Tween Ice Crushers took the ice to face their western region foes – the hometown Snipers.

Previously, the Crushers had beat the Snipers with a lopsided victory back in October, but, the Coaching Staff knew that this would be a different club playing in their own tournament.

Sarah S. opened the scoring 11 seconds into the contest on a pass from Hannah G. The visiting Crushers went ahead 2-0 when Grace T. buried a Ben C. feed. Michaela A. brought the Pyramid Centre to their feet as she scored with assists going to Avery C. and Ben C. Goderich expanded their lead to 4-1 when defensive stalwart, Megan K., set up Ben C. who made no mistake against a helpless Sniper goaltender. At this point, both teams appeared to abandon any of their defensive plans forcing Goderich starting goalie, Hannah K., to face an offensive barrage in the Goderich end. Sarah S., with a hat trick, along with Grace T.’s second gave the Crushers a tenuous 7-6 lead at the recess.

The final period saw another Sarah S. goal followed by a nice feed by Ella W. to Ben C. to extend the lead to 9-6, but, the Snipers fired four unanswered goals in the final few minutes to stun the Crushers 11-10 reminding the Goderich players that no lead is totally safe in Tween ringette action.

After an excellent Team lunch, followed by watching some highly skilled A.A.A. tournament action, the U14’s knew they had to bear down for their late afternoon tilt with the Cambridge Turbos. Coach Jane reminded the young ring flingers that it was important to forget about the morning result, but, to learn from what had happened.

Lauren S. opened the scoring in the first minute followed by Grace T. and Ben C. to make it 3-0 as a result of some great effort by Ella W. and Melanie M. Katie R. rifled home a Kiara P.feed followed by Sarah S. and Hannah G. in the final two minutes for a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Turbos were finally able to solve the steady play of Hannah K. early in the final period, but, when the hard working Arden B. was rewarded with a great goal, the final score was set with an 8-2 Crusher win.

The next day saw another must win situation for the Tweens as they had a late afternoon game versus Seaforth/Exeter. The Avalanche came out very strong showing that the W.R.R.L. standings do not mean a lot in tournament play. Hannah K. was especially sharp to start this game keeping the game scoreless until her teammates found their skating legs. Katie R. put Goderich on the board with a rocket from the high slot. The excellent, unselfish play of line mate Arden B. helped Katie R. score her second of the game a few minutes later. Also assisting on the play was stalwart player Grace M. Veteran centre, Lauren S., really gave the Crushers some distance scoring two goals in less than thirty seconds. Ella W. used her lightning speed to grab a pair of assists. Ben C. and Hannah G. rounded out the scoring giving Goderich a comfortable 6-2 lead at the break. The only Goderich goal in the second came four minutes in when Katie R. fed a reverse pass to Grace M. who exploded in from the ringette line to overpower the helpless Avalanche defenders with some insurance toward a 7-4 win setting the stage for a rematch versus St. Mary’s in the Gold Medal game.

Sunday, December 13thU14 Gold Medal Game

The veteran line of Lauren S., Sarah S., and, Hannah G. were given the starting assignment by Coach Simon for a reason, and, this trio did not disappoint scoring two goals in the first minute of the game to give the Goderich squad a ton of confidence. Ben C. then put locals ahead by three at the 10:12 mark with Avery C. and Grace T. assisting. As was the case in the first game of the tournament, the Stonetown Snipers never quit scoring a pair to narrow the gap. Lauren S. scored a pair for the hat trick, but, St. Mary’s kept attacking. In the final minute before the break, Arden B. fed Sarah S. who snapped a nifty backhand into the top corner for a nail biting 6-5 lead at the recess.

It should be noted that local goaltender, Hannah K., and Sniper ring stopper R.J. M. were both outstanding in this game making key saves all game to never allow their team to get down. With four minutes remaining in the game, Avery C. gave Grace T. a fantastic pass from the neutral zone making no mistake in flinging the ring into the far corner. With the clock winding down, St. Mary’s used the extra attacker to send the capacity crowd in the Pyramid into a frenzy, but, Hannah K. made several big saves in the final minutes sending the Ice Crushers back to Goderich with a Gold Medal 8-7 victory.
