U14 ICE CRUSHERS FINISH STRONG

At the beginning of this U14 Western Region Ringette League season, the Goderich Ice Crushers knew that they were going to be icing one of the younger teams in the loop. The Coaching Staff really were hopeful that this relatively inexperienced group would work hard and be competitive each game. After a season opening loss in Mitchell in mid-October, the Tweens have battled hard in ringing up 10 straight league wins to enter their Christmas break sporting an impressive 10 – 1 record.

December 20th vs. St. Mary’s

Their final game before the break was a tilt at the MRC where the Crushers hosted the St. Mary’s Snipers. Goderich came out very flat in this game as the visiting Snipers were really skating putting a lot of pressure on net minder, Hannah K., who was solid all game. Trailing 1 – 0, Ben C. finally gave the sellout crowd something to cheer about with two and a half minutes left in the period with assists going to Michaela A. and Katie R.e. With 23 seconds remaining in the frame, Lauren S. buried a goal to square things up again at 2 – 2.

The opening minute of the final period saw Ben C. score again courtesy of some fine work by Avery C. and Ella W. Less than a minute later, Kiara P. gave the locals a two goal cushion with a great goal. During the next shift, the Michaela-Katie duo were at it again as Michaela A. feathered an absolutely fabulous pass from behind the net to Sarah S. who made no mistake versus the helpless Sniper goaltender. After Grace M. exploded in from her defensive position to rifle in a rocket, Sarah S. And Lauren S. each scored to put the game out of reach. Michaela A. then tallied her third assist of the contest when she fed a nice pass to Katie R.

Melanie M. continued the scoring parade with a well earned marker. Veteran, Hannah G. followed with a goal of her own leaving enough time on the clock for Ben C. to notch the hat trick as the Ice Crushers cruised to the 12 – 2 victory. Assistant Coach, Nancy Mayhew, in her post game media scrum, had high praise for her defence giving special mention to the performance of rookie defensive stalwart, Megan K. Said Mayhew - “Meg really was a rock out there today. She was strong on the ring, and, did a great job of denying the skilled Sniper forwards.”

The U14’s now have a couple of weeks of practice before they play their next W.R.R.L. game when they travel to London on January 3rd where they will battle the Lynx.
